Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

Happy birthday Dr. Seuss!  Dr. Seuss, born Theodor Seuss Geisel was a pioneer in children’s literacy. After writing bestsellers,  Green Eggs and Ham, And to Think I Saw It On Mulberry Street, the book publisher Houghton Mifflin asked him to write a book to specifically address struggling readers. That assignment resulted in the book, The Cat in the Hat,  and targeted specific words that children were struggling with. The Cat in the Hat is still popular to this day.

To continue Dr. Seuss’ mission of fostering a love of literacy, schools across the country celebrate his birthday. All week, children are wearing wacky socks, eating green eggs, and dressing in red.  Instruction in all classes is centered around Dr. Seuss books;  fostering the love of reading.

Not only does Dr. Seuss continue to inspire a love of reading in children, but his quotes also inspire adults with life lessons from not worrying about what people think about living in the present.

Here are some of my favorite that helps me keep moving forward:

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself any direction you choose.
You’re on your own.
And you know what you know.
And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go.
(Oh, The Places You’ll Go!)

This quote has given me comfort when I doubt myself. It reminds me that I  I need to trust myself and am in charge of my destiny.

There’s no limit to how much you’ll know,
depending how far beyond zebra you go.
(On Beyond Zebra!)

When I think I am too old to learn something or try something new this quote reminds me that there are no limits, the only limit is myself.

You’ll miss the best things if you keep your eyes shut.
(I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!)

Some days I am on autopilot and don’t even see what is around me. I miss so many beautiful things that life has to offer.

Don’t cry because it is over, smile because it happened.

This is one of his most important lessons for me.  Yes, good things have to come to an end, instead of focusing that it is over, I need to be happy that I had that experience to look back on and smile.
